Why do my computer programs slow down after a new antivirus program?

Most people realize you need antivirus software on your computer.  Some people will disable their antivirus program because it slows down their computer too much.  DISABLING YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM IS DANGEROUS !

One of the most common types of programs that slow down because of antivirus software is bookkeeping or accounting software.  Other types of program that may see slowdowns are database & graphics/video programs.  Most bookeeping & other heavy duty programs will have instructions about settings for antivirus programs that will speed up your computer’s performance.  These instructions will include settings for excluding programs & related data from being scanned by your antivirus program..  If you have a network & access your bookeeping data from other computers, the settings will need to be applied to all computers.  One other setting on server based networks is to set your antivirus software not to scan network drives – assuming you have antivirus software installed on your servers!

Also verify that you don’t have two different antivirus programs running on your computer because that could also slow down your computer!  Remember to uninstall your old antivirus software before installing a new version.
