How Do I Setup My New Computer?
BEFORE TEARING DOWN YOUR OLD COMPUTER:
– Backup your information/data to thumb drive or USB hard drive
– Backup your information/data again to different media
– List the programs from your old computer you want on your new
computer & look for the installation discs & product keys.
Most programs cannot simply be copied from your old
computer to your new one. If you don’t have discs or product
keys, try calling the support number for your program!
– Check printer, video, & other connections to see if they are also on
your new computer. If not available, there may be adapters or
other ways to connect your existing printer, video & other
connections.
– Do Not Donate Or Erase Your Old Computer Yet !
SETTING UP YOUR NEW COMPUTER:
– Unpack your new computer & connect to video & internet.
If you are using wireless internet, you will need your wireless access code
– Run Windows Update repeating until it says there are no more updates left
– Check to see if your computer came with virus protection software
If so, check to see the expiration date – these usually range
from 30 days to 180 days.
– Run virus protection updates repeating until no more updates are left
– Install your programs from discs or downloads
– Transfer your data from backup media
– Do not erase your data from backup media
– Connect remaining printers & devices
You are usually better to download new software/drivers
than installing from old discs for printers & other hardware
– Keep your old computer available for long enough to verify that
everything is transferred & working properly on new computer
