Computer Tip – Why would your internet speed suddenly drop?

I have lived many places in the Boise, Idaho area & also lived in Nampa & Caldwell & now Meridian. I have had both CableOne & CenturyLink for internet providers. In any given neighborhood, one of these may give better performance than the other – a lot depends on neighborhood age & saturation of the internet provider’s bandwidth into a neighborhood or area – they may not always tell you if they are over saturated & the front end tech support may not even know.

If service speed drops suddenly, it could be due to construction, over saturation in an area, something in the residence, or needed maintenance somewhere along the provider’s lines. It always helps to check with your neighbors before selecting an internet provider or if speeds drop.

Always reboot the provider’s equipment & your computer to see if problem continues.

Also keep in mind that internet speeds may drop at times of the day depending on demand – like evenings for movie downloads, kids home from school, etc.

I have also seen virus/spyware infections cause perceived internet speed drops.
